Green smoothie recipes

Recipes for green smoothies are said to be healthier than those for smoothies of other colors. That’s not right, nonetheless, our green smoothie recipes are healthy, tasty – and green. Find out more how you can implement our recipes in every season.

Green smoothie recipes are supposed to be healthier

Are recipes for green smoothies really healthier than recipes for red, yellow or other colored smoothies? Green smoothies are drinks made from mostly green fruits and vegetables. They usually get their green color from a high proportion of green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, kale and others. Lately, such drinks have been marketed as “particularly healthy” because they contain an above-average amount of chlorophyll, i.e. leafy green.

Chlorophyll is one of the phytochemicals and, if you believe the advertising, it should make you particularly healthy, happy and even younger. All of this is justified by the “purifying” or “detox”, ie “detoxifying” effect of the green leaf pigment. According to the advertising claim, recipes for green smoothies are therefore healthier.

In medicine, however, the term “purification” does not exist, it comes from naturopathy and is only passed down orally. The argument of purification is usually only used to sell products or methods profitably or to compensate for one’s own unhealthy behavior with “purification cures”. Therefore, recipes for green smoothies are not generally healthier!

Not healthier, just as delicious!

Despite all the criticism, recipes for green smoothies are an excellent way to increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables and get the required amount per day. It is important that the smoothie is freshly prepared and that you consume it immediately after preparation, because the loss of vitamins in the smoothie occurs faster than with whole fruits due to the increased air contact.

Because we know that green smoothies are not for everyone, we have put together recipes for green smoothies that you, as a beginner, can use to convince even the greatest skeptics. See how delicious a healthy green smoothie tastes!

Green smoothie for spring: strawberry-spinach layered smoothie

This green smoothie consists of two smoothies that you prepare separately and only then layer on top of each other. You need:

  • 1 handful of spinach (baby spinach)
  • 1 banana
  • Some orange juice
  • 100g strawberries (or more)
  • 10 almonds or cashews or 1 tbsp almond butter
  • Some orange juice

First, puree the spinach with a ripe banana and add enough orange juice that the consistency resembles a little more runny applesauce.

Then prepare the second smoothie in a second vessel by pureeing the strawberries with the nuts and nut butter and diluting with orange juice so that this preparation also remains quite thick in consistency.

Then layer both preparations nicely on top of each other and serve with spoons. This smoothie is also great as a colorful dessert to spoon!

Green smoothie for the summer: fresh and minty

This very summery smoothie does not contain any fruit and is best served ice-cold for refreshment with ice cubes. In principle, you only need two ingredients:

    • 1 cucumber
    • 20 fresh mint or lemon balm leaves

Please make sure you get a cucumber from certified organic cultivation for this recipe, because the peel is also used here! It’s best to put the cucumber in the fridge overnight so that you can use it chilled the next day.

Cut the cucumber into small pieces and pluck the washed peppermint leaves. Puree everything into a creamy smoothie. If you like, you can serve it garnished with radish slices. An ideal refreshment in midsummer!

Recipes for green smoothies with lamb's lettuce

Green smoothie for winter: winter salad smoothie

Lamb’s lettuce also grows outdoors in protected locations or under fleece in winter and is a good alternative to lettuce from greenhouses or southern cultivation areas in winter. Alternatively, you can also use other “winter salads” such as winter purslane, which is also called Postelein. For the green winter smoothie you need:

    • 125g lamb’s lettuce
    • 1 large apple
    • 1 tbsp walnuts
    • Some water

Wash and clean the lamb’s lettuce well and cut the core out of the apple. Put both in a blender with a little water or use the hand blender to make a green smoothie.

Roughly chop the walnuts and sprinkle them on the smoothie. Do not puree with the other ingredients, the bitter substances of the walnuts would literally “bitter” the smoothie!
