The whistling or hissing breathing sounds arise in the narrowed airways when breathing in or out through the nose or mouth.

The air cannot circulate unhindered because there are constrictions  and this leads to turbulent air currents that are audible. It can also lead to a shortage of breath or shortness of breath!

In addition,  dizziness and lethargy can occur,  as there can be a lack of oxygen in the body and also in the brain.

Concomitant symptoms that often occur with Stridor are:

  • night cough
  • dripping nose
  • Chest pain
  • chills
  • fever

The most common cause of the wheezing in the chest is asthma. The immune system reacts in an unusual way to foreign substances or allergens.

The airways swell and the air becomes obstructed on its way. Tobacco use, viral infections, and bronchiolitis can also trigger this condition.
