What is nail fungus?
The technical term for nail fungus is onychomycosis, it occurs very often on the toenails, especially in men, but can also occur on the fingernails, here again women are more likely to be affected.
Once one nail is infected, the fungus can easily spread to the other nails, but mostly either on the feet or on the hands. Very rarely does it happen that the fungus spreads from the toenails to the fingernails or vice versa.
The fungus is usually caused by environmental factors such as moisture or high temperatures, e.g. by wearing closed shoes for a long time, in the swimming pool, etc.
People who are constantly in contact with water (when washing dishes, cleaning …), people over 60 with diabetes, circulatory problems or a weak immune system can also be affected.
When the fungus affects a nail, it becomes thicker and more yellowish. Sometimes the affected nail turns greyish, greenish, brownish, or black in color.
As the disease progresses, more and more parts of the nail are affected. The nail can splinter and even fall off completely. The skin under the nail is red and swollen and itchy.
In the case of fungi on the fingernails, they become yellowish or brownish, have cracks and are very fragile and weak. They cannot grow properly and they will fall off over time, just like toenail fungus.
Nail fungus – natural prevention against the spread
The following advice is for nail fungus on the feet:
- Do n’t use shoes that are too tight or synthetic. Mushrooms love the damp, dark climate without much ventilation and reproduce particularly well there. In winter, be careful not to stay with damp or wet stockings for long. Any material that does not allow the feet to breathe, e.g. plastic, should be avoided. Leather shoes are recommended and if possible they should be made so that the foot (and especially the toes) can breathe.
- Avoid going barefoot in public facilities such as bathrooms, fitness centers, changing rooms, showers, etc. After using these facilities , wash your feet well and dry them before putting on your shoes.
- Do n’t use someone else’s nail scissors or clippers. Always take your own nail scissors with you. If you have a fungus on a nail, use different scissors on it to keep the fungus from spreading. Cut the nails straight and regularly.
- Use 100% cotton socks that can absorb moisture. If you get out in the rain and your feet get wet, change your socks and use talcum powder.
In the case of fingernail fungus, we recommend the following measures:
- Use waterproof gloves for washing dishes or other activities that involve contact with water.
- Do n’t use someone else’s nail file or scissors. Always use your own manicure tools to prevent the fungus from spreading. Use a different nail file or scissors on the fungal nail.
- Do not share the towel with other people to avoid contact.
